/A Fine Line
Junghee reclined against Gwiboon’s pillows watching at the said girl shimmied out of her wet underwear and dropped them into the hamper with a grimace. She was in just her t-shirt and cotton underwear, stretching out on the sheets with her eyes trained on Gwiboon who was pulling on a new pair of panties and sliding on a pair of ripped jeans and a flowered sweater.
“What are we doing?” Junghee asked suddenly as she watched Gwiboon comb her fingers through her hair.
Honestly, she expected the other girl to laugh at her. She expected to be made fun of for being such a girl and inquiring what this was, but instead, Gwiboon just paused, her face unreadable before she chuckled lightly.
“I have no idea,” she admitted, going back to preening in the mirror.
“Do you want to go to coffee?” Junghee blurted out, still not moving from her spot on the bed.
“Now?” Gwiboon asked, applying light pink blush to the apples of her cheeks.
“Sure,” she smiled.
A half hour later, they were at the coffee shop sitting on the worn out sofa and sipping their coffees (even if Gwiboon still insisted that a mocha wasn’t real coffee).
“Oh my god, you’re right!” Gwiboon exclaimed, laughing at one of Junghee’s snide remarks about their professor, “And then he…shit.”
In her excitement, Gwiboon spilled some of her latte on her jeans.
“Hold on,” Junghee said, standing up from her place on the couch, “I’ll go get some napkins.”
“Thanks,” Gwiboon smiled gratefully.
But when Junghee came back thirty seconds later, her seat was occupied. And not just by anyone. Seungri, one of the most popular guys on campus and a known womanizer, was sitting where she had been before she had gotten up.
“You’ve got to come to this club tonight,” he was telling her, “I know one of the guys who DJ’s there and I can get him to put you on the VIP list so you won’t have to wait to get in.”
“A ton of people are going to be there,” he went on, “but I bet that you’ll be the most beautiful girl.”
Junghee felt her blood boil. Like this guy, who was with a new girl every week, would be able to fully appreciate Gwiboon’s beauty. There was no way he would take the time to admire the other girl’s long, graceful neck and sharp collar bones. He probably wouldn’t notice how soft the skin on the insides of her wrists was and he definitely wouldn’t put forth the effort to catch what emotions flashed through the other’s eyes before she quickly pushed them down to regain her always cool and calm exterior. He didn’t deserve
to appreciate all of that.
“Excuse me, you’re in my seat,” Junghee interrupted, noticing the annoyance on his face before he realized that it was an attractive female who had spoken- his trademark charming smile quickly took the place of his scowl.
“You should come too,” he grinned, “There’s always room for another gorgeous girl.”
“No thanks,” she immediately responded, crossing her arms over her chest, “Please move.”
Seungri was obviously surprised by the hostility in her tone along with the fact that she’d outright turned him down. Junghee just sighed impatiently as she tapped the toe of her heavy black boot against the floor as she waited.
Still looking stunned and mildly offended, he stood up and allowed Junghee to immediately take his place next to the other girl.
“So Gwiboon,” he began, looking over at her.
Junghee placed one of the napkins over the wet spot on Gwiboon’s thigh, pressing down to soak up the liquid. And if she also managed to stale some claim over the other at the same time…well, it certainly didn’t hurt.
“No,” Gwiboon responded, all ice as she looked up from Junghee’s hand on her thigh, “Thanks.” And with that her eyes were back on the other girl, giving Seungri no more of her time.
After a moment of stunned silence, he walked away mumbling bitches
under his breath in frustration and embarrassment.
“Ugh thank you!” Gwiboon exclaimed when he was out of earshot, dropping her head onto Junghee’s shoulder, “That’s the third time he’s tried to ask me out.”
“It was no problem,” Junghee told her, anger still flowing through her chest, “He’s so sleazy. You deserve so much better than that.”
“What? You mean like you?” Gwiboon teased, looking up from the stain on her jeans to meet Junghee’s eyes.
But the moment they made eye contact, all humor was sucked out of the statement and both felt their cheeks flush before they quickly looked away to sip their drinks in silence.
“Eunsook!” Junghee wailed as soon as she entered her apartment that evening.
“Yeah?” her roommate responded, poking her head out of her bedroom.
“I need help,” Junghee responded pathetically, peeling her coat off before flopping down onto the couch.
“Okay, what’s up?” Eunsook asked, sitting down in the chair the sat next to the couch in their tiny living room.
“You know Gwiboon?” Junghee said, eyes on the ceiling and not on Eunsook’s face.
“Yeah, what has she done now?” Eunsook chuckled, used to Junghee bitching about the other girl constantly.
“So what has she not
done now?” Eunsook amended the question.
“You know how I used to hate her?” Junghee began, knowing that she was going about this in an extremely indirect and ineloquent way.
“Well, I don’t anymore.”
“That’s good!” Eunsook responded, “It’s always better to-”
“No,” Junghee interrupted her, “I like her.”
“Right,” Eunsook said, obviously still not getting what Junghee was trying to say. Though the latter couldn’t blame her, “It’s nice when-”
“Eunsook,” Junghee stated, sitting up and looking into her friend’s eyes, “I really
like her.” She watched as Eunsook stared at her, mind slowly wrapping itself around what she had said. Eunsook’s eyes widened.
“Oh, you mean…”
“Yeah…” Junghee fidgeting, looking down into her lap and refusing to meet her roommate’s eyes.
“I mean, I didn’t know that…I thought you liked boys?” Eunsook tried, stumbling over her words as she always did when she wasn’t sure what to say.
“No,” Junghee replied, still not looking up.
“Does…does Gwiboon like girls?”
“Well…” Junghee’s cheeks flushed- she didn’t know how to answer that without admitting the extent of her…relationship with the other girl, “I think so.”
“That’s good,” Eunsook said, as much enthusiasm as she could muster showing in her voice. And Junghee smiled into her lap. She knew that Eunsook had no problem with her liking girls, but she was just completely thrown off guard and had no idea what she was supposed to say. But she was trying and that’s why Junghee loved her.
“Yeah, I guess it is,” she conceded, looking up finally and smiling at Eunsook.
“Does she like you?” Eunsook questioned, seemingly reassured by Junghee’s smile.
“You should tell her,” Eunsook told her simply.
“Easier said than done,” Junghee laughed, imagining professing her love (love?) to Gwiboon during their English class.
“True,” Eunsook nodded, “But you’re good at being straight forward. You should just tell her and see what happens.”
Junghee knew that she was right. Eunsook knew her well and she knew that Junghee was the type of girl to just say what was on her mind, no matter what the possible outcome. Her feelings for Gwiboon shouldn’t be any different. In theory.
“You’re right,” she said, watching as Eunsook’s smile stretched across her face- clearly glad that she’d managed to give good advice despite not having any idea what she was talking about, “I think I’ll go tell her tomorrow.”
That gave her a night to plan what she was going to say and to mentally prepare herself. Or else it just gave her an entire night to chicken out.
Despite the mini panic attacks that Junghee had from the moment she told Eunsook that she would talk to Gwiboon to that very moment when she stood outside of the aforementioned girl’s apartment, she still raised her fist and knocked, feeling another shudder of nerves wrack through her body.
She’d barely slept at all and part of her had wanted to the morning to never come while another part of her couldn’t wait. But even once the sun had slid up over the horizon and brightened the world, she still had to wait. Because she knew that Gwiboon liked to sleep in when she had the chance and confessing to a grumpy and sleep deprived Gwiboon seemed pretty self-destructive.
So she’d waited until 10:30- well, she’d left her apartment at 10:14 and made the short walk to Gwiboon’s at a nervously frenzied pace, arriving at just 10:22, eight minutes earlier than she’d intended. And while she had half a mind to wait outside for those eight minutes, she knew that she’d spend those eight minutes psyching herself out and convincing herself to go home. So she knocked.
A moment later Gwiboon opened the door, obviously having woken up not much before. She was in loose pajama pants and a somewhat fitted hoodie with her slightly wavy hair pulled back into a high ponytail, her bangs falling into her eyes. She was gorgeous.
But clearly confused.
“Junghee?” she asked, pulling her phone out of the kangaroo pocket of her sweatshirt to see if she’d missed a text. She hadn’t.
Junghee felt herself pause, terrified to move now that Gwiboon was right in front of her. But she pushed past the fear and took a step into the apartment, pulling Gwiboon to her by her shoulders and kissing her- nothing too intense, but just a firm press of lips. She felt her body relax a bit when Gwiboon’s lips pressed back. But she couldn’t enjoy the contact because she still had to speak.
She pulled back.
“Gwiboon,” she started, hands still wrapped around the other’s girl’s upper arms, “I like you. And I really don’t know what the hell this is, but please- just…be mine.”
Junghee felt her cheeks burning as she finished speaking, wishing that she’d remembered to say what she planned to. But even now she had no idea what that was.
She dropped her arms to her sides when Gwiboon didn’t respond immediately, shame churning in her gut and her mind laughing at her for thinking that she could just go and claim Gwiboon as her own so easily. She should have just kept her mouth shut. Now she’d probably ruined whatever it was that they had and humiliated herself completely. If only she could-
“What?” Junghee’s head immediately snapped up, eyes locking with Gwiboon’s. The other girl looked nervous, but there was a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
“I said yes,” she repeated, “I’ll be yours.”
