Summary: It’s Minho who comforts Jonghyun the night before Immortal Song
Minho would like to think that it was just the sight of Jonghyun curled up on the couch at four in the morning that had his heart melting just a little. It was plausible, of course, that this feeling was simply empathy for the older boy who had been up all night- tossing and turning, making countless trips to the bathroom and kitchen, and finally ending up on the couch in the living room- nervous about his performances on Immortal Song
the following day. Or that day, now that it was early morning.
He knew that Jonghyun hadn’t wanted to bother any of them with his restlessness- he could tell that the other boy had been being as quiet as he possibly could be. But sharing a room with Jonghyun meant that he heard even the tiniest movement. Truthfully, he’d been awake most of the night, listening to the other boy sigh into the dark room. Not even because of the noise, but because he was concerned for his fellow band mate.
Minho assured himself that he would have been just as worried for any of the other members as well, but he was doing a poor job at convincing himself. Not to say that he didn’t care for the other three boys- of course he did! But ever since he’s begun sharing a room with just Jonghyun, he’d felt like they’d created a deeper bond between the two of them. Though, he admitted, it could just be his imagination.
“Hyung?” he whispered as he approached the figure on the couch, moving cautiously so as not to startle the other boy.
“Minho?” Jonghyun questioned, squinting into the darkness at the form standing above him.
“Yeah,” Minho responded, sitting down next to the older boy- careful not to sit too close, even if his gut was telling him to gather Jonghyun into his arms and hold him until he fell asleep.
“Oh,” Jonghyun said, seeming a bit confused to be speaking to another human at such an hour.
“Can’t sleep?” Minho asked, wanting to kick himself as soon as he uttered the words. Obviously Jonghyun couldn’t sleep- why else would be on the couch in the middle of the night?
“Yeah,” Jonghyun murmured, leaning back against the cushions again and staring straight ahead into the murky darkness of the living room.
Minho leaned back as well, sensing that he should just be quiet. Maybe his presence would calm Jonghyun down a little. There was nothing worse than being unable to fall asleep and feeling like the only living person in the entire world.
“I’m scared,” Jonghyun uttered quietly a few minutes later, the softness of his voice only barely cutting through the silence that had settled over the two of them.
“What if I mess up?” Jonghyun fretted, worried eyes coming to rest on Minho’s face- seeking reassurance.
“You won’t,” Minho told him, meeting his gaze, “But even if you do, so what? It’s no secret that you’re a great singer, hyung.”
“But…this is a big deal,” Jonghyun sighed, fingers twitching in his lap, “It’s supposed to prove that idols can sing. If I mess up, then what does that say? And I’m representing SHINee. Alone. If I mess up, it will reflect on the rest of the group. I don’t want to let you guys down.”
Minho felt his heart break with the way the lead singer’s dark brown eyes welled up with tears, his lower lip trembling as he tried to keep himself from crying.
“Jonghyun-hyung,” Minho murmured, moving forward and encasing the other in his arms- against his chest- just like he wanted to do initially, “No matter what, you won’t let us down. Everyone is already so proud of you for getting selected to be on the show to begin with. We’ll be rooting for you, but winning doesn’t matter. We just want to see you do your best. We know how talented you are and how passionate you are about music. It’s enviable, hyung.”
Minho tightened his grip as he felt Jonghyun’s back shake with his quiet sobs- letting out all of the nervous tension that he’d been holding in.
“I want to do you proud,” Jonghyun sniffled into his shoulder, hands pressed hard against Minho’s back.
“You always do me proud,” Minho immediately responded, only realizing his mistake after he’d spoken, “Us. You always do us proud.”
“I make you proud, Minho-ah?” Jonghyun asked, pulling back and looking at Minho with puffy eyes and tear-streaked cheeks.
Minho couldn’t help but feel like Jonghyun was asking something else than he was before with the way his teary eyes were looking into his own. He swallowed nervously, feeling his heart rate suddenly speed up. He nodded, not breaking eye contact.
Much to his relief, Jonghyun’s face broke into a smile- grinning at him warmly even as one last tear slipped down his cheek.
“You’ll be amazing, hyung,” Minho told him. And before he could lose his nerve, he leaned forward and tenderly pressed his lips against Jonghyun’s, pulling back almost immediately with a blush staining his cheeks.
Jonghyun stared at him, surprise written all over his face, before he was smiling again and nuzzling back into Minho’s embrace affectionately.
Minho smiled into the dark and silent living room as he held Jonghyun in his arms, feeling the other boy relax in his embrace. It wasn’t long until his breathing had evened out and he was finally asleep, arms wrapped tightly around Minho’s waist.
